Centro Ricerche FIAT (CRF) is an industrial organisation which has the mission of promoting, developing and transferring innovation in order to provide competitiveness to its clients and partners which include the different companies in the FIAT Group, automotive suppliers, companies from other sectors of industry, SMEs, and national and international research agencies.

Priority areas of R&D at CRF include Energy and the Environment, Safety and Well-Being, and Sustainable Growth. CRF currently has approximately 870 employees and is organised in the following principal technical divisions: Vehicle Architectures, Vehicles Systems, Advanced Manufacturing &Materials, Infomobility, Advanced E/E Systems, Powertrain Research and technologies. In order to cover a relatively broad spectrum of technologies, CRF has developed a global network of contacts comprising national and international research institutes, research organizations and universities.

The CRF Micro and Nanotechnologies Department is active in these future and emerging technologies since ten years with a permanent staff of 50 researchers having a wide-scope expertise on chemistry, physics, material science and engineering devided in three units, Optics&photonics (displays, lighting systems, electro-optics), Mechatronics (shape memory alloys, magnetorheological fluids, piezomaterials, CNTs) and Nanomaterials&nanodevices (nanostructured materials and surfaces for opto-electronics and sensors, nanomanufacturing of devices).
