Integrating optical sensing into lab-on-a-chip systems

A combination of waveguides and microfluidics is easily achieved through femtosecond-laser micromachining.

An article posted on the SPIE website describes how and suggests this is a promising technique for fabricating optofluidic devices.

Integrating optical sensing into lab-on-a-chip systems

A very interesting technology. It is very flexible and seems to be especially well-suited for prototyping. Furthermore the fabrication of waveguides can be applied to chips with already existing microfluidic channels. It would be interesting to know if the channel fabrication process is fast enough to be used for mass production.
